What we are seeing in Georgia now is the same development that we saw in Belarus years ago, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said in a speech at the hearing on the deterrence on NATO’s eastern flank at the Helsinki Commission.
“I was in Georgia a little over a year ago. I was there with the foreign ministers of the Baltic states and Iceland before the elections. I saw a great readiness of the Georgian people. At that time, they still believed that the government would fulfill its promise of integration with the West and the European Union, but this promise has been significantly broken,” said Margus Tsahkna.
According to him, the Estonian people are “very close” to the Georgian people.
"We supported their reforms. What we see now cannot be called a government. This is a regime that does not fulfill the will of the Georgian people. What we see now is the development of the same events that we saw in Belarus years ago. This is very dangerous. The Estonian people will continue to support the Georgian people for freedom," the Estonian Foreign Minister noted.
