European Commission Spokesperson - Georgia must ensure the institutional independence and strength of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, the Special Investigation Service and the Personal Data Protection Service

As you know, respect for the rule of law and the fight against corruption are fundamental elements of the European Union. These objectives are also part of our core work on the accession to the European Union of those countries that wish to join us, - the European Commission Spokesperson for Enlargement, International Partnerships and the Mediterranean, Guillaume Mercier, told the editor of Euroscope, Tamar Nutsubidze, when answering a question of how the Commission assesses the decision of the Georgian Dream to abolish the Anti-Corruption Agency.

"The issue of fighting corruption is clearly highlighted in our enlargement report. The report, in fact, concluded that there is a setback in Georgia in terms of fighting corruption. The report recommends, in the form of recommendations, that Georgia should ensure the effectiveness, institutional independence and strength of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, the Special Investigation Service and the Personal Data Protection Service. Recent events confirm that Georgia is moving further away from the EU path," the spokesperson noted.
