The Kutaisi Court of Appeals upheld the ruling of the first instance court, which had sentenced the founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti, Mzia Amaglobeli, to 2 years in prison.
Mzia Amaglobeli’s lawyers requested to overturn the verdict against Mzia Amaglobeli and release her, while the prosecutor’s office requested a harsher sentence for Mzia Amaglobeli.
Mzia Amaglobeli was also present at today’s hearing. She exercised his right to speak and addressed the judge. According to her, she is not afraid of imprisonment, but of what she will find outside – a country fighting for freedom or a country conquered without tanks.
On August 6, Mzia Amaglobeli, the founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti, was sentenced to 2 years in prison. In particular, she was convicted under Article 353, Part 1 of the Criminal Code, which provides for resistance, threats or violence against a public order defender or other representative of the government. The punishment for this act is a fine, house arrest for a term of up to 2 years, and also imprisonment for a term of 2 to 6 years.
