“Unfortunately, it is unclear why this decision was made. The [EU] did not provide any explanation. There was talk that they were ready to postpone this dialogue, and this was the position communicated to us. Therefore, once again, we state that we are ready at any time, in any format, to answer any questions,” Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Alexander Darakhvelidze told journalists while commenting on Brussels’ decision to cancel the Georgia–EU dialogue.
According to the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, the meeting was supposed to cover human rights issues. As for the opinion that the dialogue was postponed because Georgian Dream intended to include a sanctioned member in the delegation — specifically Alexander Darakhvelidze — the Deputy Minister stated that not a single Georgian citizen is sanctioned by the European Union, therefore such claims do not reflect reality.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia has already provided detailed comments on the matter. A specific dialogue on the protection of human rights was planned. Therefore, talking about sanctions is absolutely irrelevant. They gave us specific topics that were to be discussed in the dialogue, and based on that, the relevant agencies were determined — those that were supposed to provide comprehensive answers based on facts and evidence to the questions raised by them.
Unfortunately, as far as we know, they themselves no longer wished to hear these answers, and therefore the dialogue was postponed. When there is readiness for dialogue, the Government of Georgia — every representative who will participate — will provide comprehensive answers to every question they have.
Unfortunately, it is unclear why this decision was made. They did not give any explanation. The only communication was that they were ready to postpone the dialogue, and this is how their position reached us. Therefore, once again, we state that we are ready at any time, in any format, to answer any question. If they are interested in the official position of Georgia regarding the issues they have raised, we are prepared to respond comprehensively.
Regarding the sanctions issue — not a single Georgian citizen is sanctioned by the European Union, therefore such claims do not correspond to reality. The Georgian side determines the composition of the delegation based on the issues that will be raised by them. The Georgian side will determine the Georgian delegation, and it will answer the questions that the relevant EU representatives have,” Alexander Darakhvelidze stated.
For reference, the meeting of the Georgia–EU dialogue on human rights issues — originally scheduled for November 21, 2025, in Brussels by mutual agreement — was postponed just a few days before the meeting at the decision of the EU.
