“This is a very bad and dangerous amendment. I intend to call on lawyers as well — if the law allows this and extends the ban to lawyers so that they are left without phones and technical devices in the courtroom, then yes, lawyers should not enter court hearings until this inquisitorial and rights-violating law is withdrawn,” — said lawyer and founder of “House of Justice,” Eka Beselia, on PalitraNews’ program “360 Degrees.”
According to Beselia, lawyers can have a very strong influence on the dangerous decision restricting the bringing of mobile phones into courtrooms.
“I remember the period during the previous regime when I would enter the court and we had to leave our phones outside. I remember that process very painfully, and I was one of the initiators in 2013 when we abolished this restriction and adopted amendments that opened the courtroom and eliminated such discriminatory bans. That is why this topic is even more painful for me now, and I will be extremely categorical. I want to tell all lawyers that they must be active. The Bar Association has more than 10,000 members, and it just celebrated its 20th anniversary — this date is not just numbers, it is history. There is no other professional union of this scale in the country. This is a very powerful force, which means lawyers can have a very strong influence on this vicious and extremely dangerous decision. I thought the adoption of these terrible laws had ended, but every day we see how the legislation becomes worse,” — stated Eka Beselia.
