According to government's decision, first state language exam will be held in 2025

By decision of the Government of Georgia, an official language exam will be held in 2025. As Minister of Education, Science and Youth Givi Mikanadze stated at the briefing held at the Ministry, registration for the exam will begin on November 24 and end on December 1, and the exam will be held for the first time in the history of the Georgian education system.

According to Givi Mikanadze, most countries in the world conduct state language exams, based on the results of which the examinee is given a certificate of language proficiency recognized by that specific country. This is especially important for foreign students, foreign citizens with the right to work in the public service, Georgians living abroad, and non-Georgian-speaking personnel employed in the business sector.

“The state language exam is important for strengthening the status of Georgian as an official language and expanding the area of language functioning. For this purpose, in accordance with the 2023-2024 Action Plan of the State Language Strategy, the National Center for Assessment and Examinations has prepared an exam that fully complies with international standards. From now on, the state language exam will be held several times a year and will allow us to test four competencies. These are: listening, reading, writing and speaking. At this stage, two tests of different difficulty will be conducted: the first will determine the A1 and A2 levels of Georgian language proficiency, the second - B1 and B2 levels. The levels will be differentiated depending on how many points the applicant accumulates. Starting from 2030, in addition to the A1, A2, B1 and B2 levels, we plan to conduct exams determining the C1 and C2 levels, and work is also actively underway in this direction,” the Minister noted.

According to Givi Mikanadze, registration for the Georgian language exam will be possible only electronically on the registration page of the National Assessment and Examination Center online.naec.ge.

In addition, as stated in the information released by the Ministry of Education, a Braille system or a special electronic program is provided for visually impaired and blind examinees. The document confirming the level of proficiency in the state language will be issued by the State Language Department based on the results of the state language exam.
