Vakhtang Kapanadze: Europe’s statement recognizing Ukraine as part of European security is important — the Soviet Union couldn’t compete militarily with the West, and Russia’s capabilities are even more limited

“It is important that Europe has declared it considers Ukraine as an integral part of European security,” Major General Vakhtang Kapanadze said on PalitraNews, discussing a potential “peace agreement” between Ukraine and Russia with U.S. involvement.

According to Kapanadze, if an agreement is not reached and Ukraine loses U.S. support, it will face difficulties — but this would not be catastrophic, as European countries have similar capabilities.

“Europe, especially France, has intelligence capabilities, and so does the UK. Of course, losing U.S. support would be a worse scenario for Ukraine, but it would not be a death sentence. The important thing is Europe’s statement that we consider Ukraine as part of European security. It doesn’t matter whether Ukraine is in NATO or not. Ukraine is being integrated into the EU’s military-industrial system and collective defense system. The drone defense wall to protect Europe will start from Ukraine, and Ukraine will implement it. Losing U.S. assistance won’t be easy for Ukraine, but it won’t collapse. However, Trump’s administration could very easily collapse as a result. According to recent polls, 85% of Americans view Putin negatively, and political opponents are exploiting every misstep. I don’t think this would be beneficial for Trump,” Kapanadze said.

Regarding Russia’s ability to continue the war in Ukraine, Kapanadze believes Russia can sustain the conflict at its current pace, but its capabilities are limited.

“At this pace, Russia can continue the war without becoming sensitive to losses. It continues to send people into the conflict. Russia can persist in the confrontation at this scale and with these costs. However, the Soviet Union could not keep up with the arms race against the West during the Cold War. Russia’s capabilities are even more limited. Strikes on Russian territory do not work in Russia’s favor. There is no doubt that Russia cannot technologically match Europe,” Kapanadze stated.
