Italian Senator Marco Lombardo: Chemical weapons in Georgia? The Italian government must summon the ambassador

Chemical weapons in Georgia? What more are we waiting for before the Italian government takes a position against the ruling Georgian Dream and in defense of the Georgian people? - Italian Senator Marco Lombardo wrote on social media.

According to him, Georgian Dream systematically uses violence and arrests as tools to silence journalists and political opponents.

“Chemical weapons in Georgia? The [Italian] government must summon the ambassador.

The BBC’s journalistic investigation shows that chemical weapons were used in Georgia against civilian protesters. For over a year we have been saying that Georgian Dream has established an illiberal regime in Georgia, systematically using violence and arrests as instruments to suppress journalists and political opponents.

Now a serious accusation has been added to these violations: the use of chemical weapons, which violates human rights. What more are we waiting for before the Italian government takes a position against the ruling Georgian Dream and in defense of the Georgian people?

It is urgently necessary to summon Italy’s ambassador to Georgia to demand useful clarifications regarding the massive human rights violations in the country.

Today, being Georgian means defending European values of freedom and the rule of law. We are Georgia. We are Europe,” Lombardo writes.
