State Security Service questions Zviad Kharazishvili (“Khareba”) in connection with BBC report

Zviad Kharazishvili, also known as “Khareba,” former head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Department of Special Assignments, was questioned at the State Security Service (SSS).

This was confirmed to InterpressNews by the SSS.

According to available information, Kharazishvili was questioned today in connection with the investigative material prepared by BBC. The former Minister of Internal Affairs, Vakhtang Gomelauri, also gave testimony at the agency.

For context, BBC prepared and published an investigative report indicating that in November–December 2024, the Georgian authorities allegedly used the chemical substance “Camite” to disperse protest rallies - a substance last used during World War I.

Following the release of the report, the State Security Service launched an investigation under two charges:

  1. Exceeding official authority
  2. Assisting a foreign organization in hostile activity.
