The decision of the European Court of Human Rights regarding the events of June 20 confirms that the charges brought by the Prosecutor’s Office against Giorgi Gakharia are fabricated, the political party For Georgia said in a statement responding to the Strasbourg Court’s ruling on the June 20–21, 2019 case.
According to the party, “this decision is a verdict against the real offenders.”
“We agree with the Grand Chamber’s ruling of the Strasbourg Court on the June 20 case. This is exactly what we have always said. The Grand Chamber's decision confirms that the charges against Giorgi Gakharia were fabricated — this is political persecution, and these charges serve the purpose of shielding the real perpetrators from responsibility. Furthermore, the Grand Chamber’s decision is a verdict against the true offenders. We will use this decision in every way possible as evidence before the Committee of Ministers to prevent the falsification of the case. This case will definitely be properly investigated under an independent judiciary, and the real offenders will be held accountable,” the statement reads.
For reference, the European Court of Human Rights has ordered the state to pay compensation to 26 individuals in relation to the so-called “Gavrilov Night” case.
According to the Strasbourg Court’s ruling in Tsaava and Others v. Georgia, the state must pay €75,000 each to two applicants as compensation for material damages, and €85,000 each to two more applicants.
The decision also states that Georgia must pay varying amounts to all complainants for non-pecuniary damages. In addition, the state must pay €38,414.99 to 22 applicants as reimbursement for costs and expenses. The compensation must be paid within three months of the judgment’s delivery.
