Guram Macharashvili: The United National Movement was banned by the United National Movement itself -by its actions and its crimes, not by us

“The United National Movement is a regrettable past, and no one will ever be able to bring a regrettable past back into the present. There is public evidence that such a directly fascist ‘political organization’ should not exist,” said MP Guram Macharashvili of the People’s Power party while speaking to journalists, commenting on the lawsuit filed by the United National Movement with the Constitutional Court.

According to him, the United National Movement effectively banned itself.

“The United National Movement is a regrettable past, and no one will ever be able to bring that regrettable past back into the present. We summoned people to the investigative commission who recalled the tragic past that the United National Movement inflicted on Georgia and its society. That is why we filed a lawsuit so that, even legally, there would no longer be any risk of a repeat of the regime created by the United National Movement—something that will most likely be confirmed by a decision of the Constitutional Court. There is public evidence that such a directly fascist ‘political organization’ should not exist. No matter how much this regrettable past struggles now, these are nothing more than attempts. The United National Movement was banned by the United National Movement itself—by its actions and its crimes, not by us,” Macharashvili said.

For reference, Unity – United National Movement has filed a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court against laws adopted by Georgian Dream that prohibit political parties and specific individuals from engaging in political activities.

Earlier, 88 members of parliament applied to the Constitutional Court of Georgia regarding the constitutionality and possible banning of three political parties: Unity – United National Movement, Coalition for Change: Gvaramia, Melia, Girchi, Droa, and Strong Georgia – Lelo, For the People, For Freedom!.
