Marta Kos: I hope Georgia’s government will return to the European path – we will continue supporting civil society and independent media to show the government when it is wrong

“We will continue supporting civil society and independent media, because this is very important—not only to give hope to the people, but also to tell the government that they are wrong if they do not take the people’s will into account,” Marta Kos, European Commissioner for Enlargement, told journalists in Brussels. She was responding to a question from Euroscope’s editor about what Georgia should expect from the European Council’s final conclusions and how it could return to the European path amid the current situation in the country.

“The Council will make the conclusions, so I cannot comment on them. But you know, the European Commission’s enlargement report contains recommendations and conclusions regarding Georgia. In this report, we state that Georgia is experiencing a democratic regression unlike any other country. We expect that if the country wants to move forward on the European path, they need to act differently. This concerns the government. Of course, we will continue supporting civil society and independent media, because this is very important—not only to give hope to the people, but also to tell the government that they are wrong if they do not consider the people’s will,” Kosi said.

She added that she hopes Georgia will return to the European path.

“Indeed, I truly hope that Georgia’s government, with the support of your people, will return to the European path, but of course, that is in their hands,” the Commissioner said.
