I think the scenes of EU flags in Tbilisi’s squares will stay with us. It was a strong message from people who want to be at the heart of Europe, Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, said in Strasbourg, where the Sakharov Prize winners are being awarded.
“This is a message that encourages us not to turn our backs. This is what representatives of Georgian civil society and organizations are asking us to do, who have come to us and said: ‘Please, we want to be part of the European Union, don’t turn your back on us.’” So, anything that threatens the foundations of democracy, as well as Georgia’s accession to the European Union, will face strong opposition in this Parliament, and you can be sure of that,” the President of the European Parliament said.
According to her, the European Parliament continues to stand by the Georgian people, and this is the message she will bring to the European Council.
“We stand by the Georgian people who see their future in the European Union. I will be attending the European Council tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, and this is the message I will bring with me. We are seeking the strategic autonomy that the European Union needs for a strong continent, including in its neighborhood and in terms of the accession of countries that want to join. Regarding freedom and protection of the media, the European Parliament is firm,” Metsola noted in response to a question from a Georgian journalist.
