“I don’t recall anyone ever being deliberately released so early simply to ensure there would be no footage of them leaving prison. This once again shows how detached the so-called authorities are from reality and how completely they have stepped outside their service role,” said Giga Lemonjava, one of the leaders of the Coalition for Change, commenting on the early release of the coalition’s leader Zurab Japaridze from Rustavi Prison several hours ahead of schedule.
According to Lemonjava, Japaridze was released early specifically to prevent footage of him being greeted by his supporters outside the prison.
“Zurab Japaridze is heading to his home and will likely make a statement there. We, his friends and fellow fighters, are waiting for him at his residence. He was released early on purpose so that there would be no footage of how people welcome him, how his friends greet him, and how he leaves prison. On the one hand, this is cynical on the part of the authorities; on the other hand, it shows how afraid the authorities are of any activity connected to freedom, our victory, and the continuation of our struggle. What they did is absolutely inexplicable. I cannot recall any case where someone was deliberately released so early in the morning just to ensure there would be no footage of them leaving prison. This once again demonstrates how detached the so-called authorities are from reality and how completely they have left the service zone. But that’s fine — this meeting will take place at his residence,” Giga Lemonjava said.
Zurab “Girchi” Japaridze, one of the leaders of the Coalition for Change, left Rustavi Prison after seven months of imprisonment. Zurab “Girchi” Japaridze was detained on May 22 in the courtroom. He had been summoned to provide explanations to the Temporary Investigative Commission of the Parliament of Georgia, which he did not attend. Japaridze was charged under Article 349 of the Criminal Code, which refers to “failure to comply with the request of the Temporary Investigative Commission of the Parliament of Georgia.”
