Tbilisi Court of Appeals upholds conviction of 21-year-old Mate Devidze

The Tbilisi Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of 21-year-old Mate Devidze, who was convicted of assaulting a police officer.

The decision was made by Judge Nino Chakhnashvili. With Chakhnashvili’s ruling, the judgment of the first instance court, according to which Davidze was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison, remained unchanged.

Mate Devidze did not attend the pronouncement of the judgment.

For information, Mate Devidze was charged under Part 1 of Article 353 of the Criminal Code, which refers to assaulting a police officer. The offense carries a sentence of 4 to 7 years in prison.

Three police officers - Bidzina Zhamerashvili, Levan Kodalashvili and Giorgi Estatishvili - have the status of victims in the Mate Devidze case. Specifically, according to the prosecutor's office, the defendant hit them with a flagpole.
