Georgian citizen arrested in occupied Tskhinvali on charges of espionage - according to reports, detained civil activist is Tamar Mearakishvili

According to the so-called prosecutor general's office of occupied Tskhinvali, a Georgian citizen was arrested on charges of espionage.

"According to investigators, a Georgian citizen in South Ossetia collected and transmitted information about strategically important facilities in the republic, thereby posing a threat to the country's security," the press service of the so-called prosecutor general's office said in a statement.

A criminal case has been opened under Article 276 of the Russian Criminal Code (espionage), which provides for 10 to 20 years of imprisonment.

"The person in question has been detained and the investigation is identifying other persons involved in the crime," reads the statement.

According to the media reports, the detained civil activist is Tamar Mearakishvili. Yesterday, she told friends that unknown persons had broken into her apartment from the balcony. After that, contact with Mearakishvili has cut off. Yesterday afternoon, the civil activist announced that she planned to go on a hunger strike from today in protest against “the arbitrary use of power, the complete disregard for the law on civil service, labor legislation and her rights.” Mearakishvili has been unable to obtain a new passport for more than a year, which has caused her problems with movement and employment. Mearakishvili believes that the government’s actions are related to her critical comments on social media.
