Significant stages of the education reform will be implemented in 2026, both in terms of infrastructure, attracting academic staff, and developing programs and improving quality, according to Givi Mikanadze, Minister of Education, Science, and Youth.
He noted that 2025 was an especially important year for the education sector.
“2025 was particularly significant for education. We announced reforms for both general and higher education systems. The concept for higher education has already been approved, and the necessary legislative changes have been implemented. This was complemented by a historic and unprecedented decision in which the ruling team and the Prime Minister jointly decided that starting from September 1, 2026, all newly admitted students in state universities will study for free. This completes a full cycle of free education in the country, from pre-school through school, vocational, and higher education.
In this regard, Georgia has entered the ranks of the few countries where education is maximally accessible and fully supported by the state. This is another clear demonstration of the priority given to the development of the education sector.
At the same time, to discuss the school reform concept, we continue meetings in major cities, regions, and municipalities, where teachers clearly express their support for this reform. This directly indicates that the reform is necessary and timely.
Next year will be even more special in this respect, as the reforms are in their initial phase, and the next stages of implementation will begin in 2026. Significant steps will be taken in terms of infrastructure, attracting academic staff, program development, and quality improvement,” stated Givi Mikanadze.
