State Security Service issues statement on the release of Tamar Mearakishvili

The State Security Service of Georgia (SSS) has released a statement regarding the release of civil activist Tamar Mearakishvili, who was detained in occupied Tskhinvali.

According to the statement, the central authorities of Georgia and the State Security Service continue to actively work, using all available instruments, to secure the release of all Georgian citizens who have been illegally detained.

“As a result of intensive dialogue conducted within the existing negotiation formats, Tamar Mearakishvili has been released and is currently in territory controlled by the central authorities.

The co-chairs of the Geneva International Discussions were actively involved in the process. Communication was conducted on a permanent basis through the ‘hotline’ operated by the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM),” the statement reads.

The activist was detained by the occupation forces on December 23 on charges of espionage.
