Doctor Giorgi Chakhunashvili on October 4: I was fulfilling my professional duty; I believe that by entering the courtyard of the Orbeliani Palace I saved a number of people – I would do the same today

“I was fulfilling my professional duty. I believe that by entering there I saved a certain number of people,” said doctor Giorgi Chakhunashvili, who is charged in connection with the events of October 4.

According to him, during the events of October 4 he did not hesitate and acted instinctively, and he states that he would do the same again today.

“In the footage it can be seen that I am in the courtyard of the palace [the Presidential Administration], and I do not deny that. I was fulfilling my professional duty. I believe that by entering there I saved a certain number of people. I would do the same today; at that time I did not think, I just acted.

Yes, in the footage it can be seen that I am waving my hands; this and all other actions were medical actions. Everything I did was done for good. There was no fighting or chaos there,” Giorgi Chakhunashvili stated.

For reference, in connection with the events that unfolded in Tbilisi on October 4, charges were brought against Giorgi Chakhunashvili under Article 19–222, Part 2, Subparagraph “a” of the Criminal Code of Georgia (attempt to seize a strategic and especially important facility, committed by a group) and Article 225, Part 2 (participation in group violence), which carry a penalty of up to six years’ imprisonment.

Along with him, the defendants in the case are: Gocha Katashvili, Sulkhan Abralava, Konstantine Kokaia, Davit Zhghenti, Kakhaber Mzhavanadze, Aleksandre Gogoladze, Davit Sturua, Eva Shashiashvili, Zakro Albutashvili, Genadi Kelikhashvili, Dato Ghutskaia, Ramaz Jorbenadze, Jandri Tirkia, and Ia Darakhvelidze.
