IPI – Today marks one year since Mzia Amaglobeli was unjustly imprisoned on politically motivated charges - she has become a symbol of the fight for press freedom and democracy in Georgia

Today marks one year since IPI Press Freedom Hero Mzia Amaglobeli was unjustly imprisoned on politically motivated charges”, reads a statement published by the International Press Institute (IPI).

According to the organization, over the past year, IPI has closely monitored Mzia’s trial and consistently called for her release.

“Since her arrest and politically motivated prosecution, Mzia has become a symbol of the fight for press freedom and democracy in Georgia, where the ruling Georgian Dream party is deepening its authoritarian crackdown on dissent, and independent media is on the brink of survival.

As the legal case continues and Mzia remains behind bars, IPI will continue to closely monitor the trial, advocate for her immediate release, and defend press freedom and journalists’ rights in Georgia”, reads the statement.
