According to Amiran Giguashvili, the lawyer of former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Garibashvili, who is currently in detention, is feeling in good spirits, and the way he is being treated is normal.
After visiting Garibashvili at Rustavi Prison, the lawyer told Interpressnews that the former prime minister had no message for the public.
“I met with Irakli Garibashvili, and he is in good spirits. He has not requested to convey any specific message to the public. We discussed ongoing matters and the standard procedures that prisoners undergo in a correctional facility. The treatment toward him is normal, the same as toward any other inmate. The purpose of our meeting was to ensure, as lawyers, that his rights are protected and that he feels fine. He is in a standard cell. Accordingly, this is a standard situation,” Amiran Giguashvili said.
When asked why Irakli Garibashvili did not start a prolonged legal battle, the lawyer explained that he had not discussed this with Garibashvili because he admitted guilt and the legal outcome is already established.
“He has already made his decision. The legal outcome in this case is determined; we no longer discuss or review these matters because the outcome exists, and it results from his decision. He admitted the crime, a plea agreement was concluded under the conditions that were announced - five years of imprisonment and a fine,” the lawyer said.
According to Amiran Giguashvili, meetings and communication with Irakli Garibashvili for family members and other visitors will be allowed with the same frequency and intensity as for any other inmate.
