According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry has no information on Georgian citizens being part of the crew or detained on the tanker seized by the U.S. in the Caribbean

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia reports that, as of January 15, no information has been received by the Ministry regarding the detention of Georgian citizens as part of the crew of the tanker Veronica, which was seized by the United States in the Caribbean.

The Ministry explained that to verify information circulating in open sources about the presence of Georgian citizens on the tanker, the Georgian Embassy in the U.S. is conducting the necessary work.

“On January 15, 2026, to clarify information in open sources regarding the presence of Georgian citizens on the tanker Veronica, seized by the United States in the Caribbean, the Georgian Embassy in the U.S. is undertaking the necessary procedures.

To date, no information regarding the detention of Georgian citizens has been received by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” the Ministry stated.

For context, family members of the sailors told Radio Liberty that five Georgian sailors were reportedly on the tanker Veronica, which was sailing under the flag of Guyana and was seized on January 15 due to connections with Venezuela.
