Giorgi Vashadze granted bail of 30,000 GEL and ordered to surrender his passport and ID card

Tbilisi City Court has set bail of 30,000 GEL for the leader of the Strategy Builder party, Giorgi Vashadze, as a preventive measure for the so-called sabotage case.

In addition to the bail, the court also ordered Vashadze to surrender his ID card and passport to the investigative agency.

Judge Mzia Garshaulishvili pronounced the decision a few minutes ago.

The court set a 30-day deadline for Giorgi Vashadze to pay the bail.

As the prosecution stated at the hearing, the imposition of a preventive measure is necessary to prevent the risks of committing further crimes, as well as the risk that the accused may abscond. As prosecutor Ani Khubejashvili explained, the bail of 30,000 GEL will be restrictive for Vashadze, and the fact that he will suffer great financial damage if he commits a new crime is a deterrent for the accused to commit this crime.

During the trial, Giorgi Vashadze addressed the judge and said that the essence of the accusation was unclear to him.

"There is nothing in the case, the essence of the accusation is unclear. What actions the investigation is accusing me of, it is not clear to anyone, not even to me. What exactly did I do that they charged me with from 7 to 15 years?!", Vashadze addressed the judge.

Vashadze also appealed to the judge not to confiscate his ID card and passport, because if he does not have an ID, he will no longer be able to use simple services, including medical care.

“Do you know what the main issue is? This Article 319 is such that it must be expressed in action, this is such a crime that it cannot be committed by inaction. It is not written anywhere that Giorgi Vashadze did this, did that or this caused the crime. The accusation is challenging the action in such a way thatt he action is nowhere to be seen. This is the same as accusing someone of murder without there being either the murdered person or the weapon used to commit the crime," Vashadze addressed the judge.
