“The entire democratic world is talking about the ruling political force carrying out terror, blackmail, and restricting constitutionally guaranteed rights of Georgian citizens. The astonishing thing is that only Russia sees progress in Georgia in terms of reforms,” said Levan Samushia, a member of “Lelo - Strong Georgia,” commenting on the hearing of Georgia’s 2025 human rights report held at the UN Office in Geneva.
According to him, Georgia has reached a point where there are political prisoners and detainees in the country, and human rights are being completely ignored.
“The entire democratic world is saying that the ruling political force is carrying out terror, blackmail, restricting constitutionally guaranteed rights of Georgian citizens, and political persecution - there are political detainees and political prisoners, and everyone acknowledges this. The only defender and supporter has turned out to be the Russian regime, which openly supports Georgia’s current authorities. The astonishing thing is that only Russia sees progress in Georgia in terms of reforms. This is the dire outcome we have reached. We have reached a point where Georgia has political detainees and political prisoners, human rights are being trampled, and people are being persecuted even for gathering on sidewalks, which is a direct violation of the Georgian Constitution - something the current authorities completely disregard,” Samushia stated.
For reference, at the UN Office in Geneva, Ruslan Stroganov, Third Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Russia, during the review of Georgia’s national report within the framework of the 51st session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the UN Human Rights Council, noted that the Georgian authorities had strengthened the legal foundations for human rights protection, including the adoption of new laws. He positively assessed the efforts to implement the National Human Rights Strategy aimed at further improving the human rights protection system.
