Under the planned legislative amendments, a person who is employed under an employment contract in an organization receiving over 20% of its annual income from a foreign power will be prohibited from membership in a political party for 8 years.

The relevant package of legislative amendments was prepared by the Georgian Dream.

the Chairman of the Georgian Dream faction, Irakli Kirtskhalia, spoke about the planned amendments after the parliamentary majority session.

“The amendment related to the restriction of political party membership is being made to the Organic Law on Political Unions of Citizens.

The draft law defines the grounds for inadmissibility of political party membership. In particular, a person who is employed under an employment contract in an organization receiving over 20% of its annual income from a foreign power will be prohibited from membership in a political party for 8 years.

The State Audit Office will monitor the financial activities of a political party member.

“With a declared electoral purpose” will be replaced by the term “with a declared partisan-political purpose”, which will ensure the clarification of the content of the legal regulation, its expansion and increase in its effectiveness.

The restrictions provided for by the legislation for a political party will also apply to an entity with a declared partisan-political purpose.

In case of receiving foreign funding, the criminal liability of the head of the political party and the entity with a declared partisan-political purpose will be established.

Legislative amendment related to the public political activity of an entrepreneurial entity:

A new administrative offense is being established in the Code of Administrative Offenses for the implementation of public political activity by an entrepreneurial entity that is not related to its main entrepreneurial activity. In the event of this violation, the State Audit Office will fine the entrepreneurial entity 20,000 GEL, and in the event of a repeat or subsequent violation - 40,000 GEL," Kirtskhalia said.
