By government decision, Tbilisi State University and the Georgian Technical University will be merged

According to Givi Mikanadze, Georgia’s Minister of Education, Science, and Youth, Tbilisi State University and the Georgian Technical University will be merged.

He stated that, for the purpose of merging the universities, a temporary governing body - a council - will be established by ministerial order, and acting rectors and vice-rectors will be appointed to oversee the reorganization process.

“The launch of an important reform in the higher education system is based on in-depth analysis, international practice, and the country’s long-term development interests. Recently, a comparative analysis of academic programs, research directions, and infrastructure of state universities was conducted. Based on this process and preliminary consultations with rectors, we made the decision to merge Tbilisi State University and the Georgian Technical University. This will serve as a prerequisite for Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University to become a leading center of academic and scientific development in the region and to significantly improve its international rankings.

According to the draft legislative amendments, in order to merge the universities, a temporary governing body - a council - will be created by ministerial order, and acting rectors and acting vice-rectors will be appointed to lead the reorganization process,” Mikanadze said.
