Giorgi Baramidze on the U.S. Congress staff delegation visit: We heard exactly what we expected

Giorgi Baramidze, Political Secretary of the United National Movement, expressed satisfaction following a meeting with the U.S. Congress staff delegation, stating that both U.S. parties are aligned in their stance toward Georgia as they should be.

“We are very pleased that we heard exactly what we expected. Both U.S. parties are well-informed about the situation in Georgia. When the delegation members return to the U.S., the Congress members working on the Foreign Affairs Committee will take everything into account and take appropriate steps regarding Georgia,” Baramidze said.

He emphasized that U.S.-Georgia relations are currently at a low level, but this does not indicate low support from the U.S. toward the Georgian people.

Baramidze highlighted key topics discussed during the meeting:

  • The possibility for the U.S. to address Syria and Venezuela’s new governments to revoke the illegal recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which were recognized under Russian pressure.

  • Ongoing issues related to the “MEGOBARI Act” and the activities of what he described as Russia’s fifth column in Georgia.

  • The geopolitical importance of Georgia and the country’s historical role, which both parties in the U.S. are well aware of.

He also noted that the U.S. still does not have an officially appointed ambassador in Georgia, reflecting the current low level of diplomatic engagement, but stressed that U.S. support for the Georgian people remains strong.

The U.S. Congress staff delegation met with leaders of opposition parties at the residence of Chargé d’Affaires Alan Perselli. Attendees included:

  • Badri Japaridze, Lelo–Strong Georgia,

  • Zura Japaridze, For Change Coalition,

  • Levan Tsutsqiridze, Freedom Square, and

  • Giorgi Baramidze, United National Movement.

Prior to this, the delegation had met with Levan Zhorzholiani, Head of the Government Administration.
