Eka Beselia on her son’s arrest: I was told he was driving under the influence, the police pursued him and he stopped, during which he lightly touched the car in front, with no damage to either vehicle – Rati told me that one police officer used physical violence against him

Politician Eka Beselia says that the information circulating about her son, Rati Milorava, claiming that he “crashed into a car,” is not true. As Beselia writes on social media, after her son’s arrest the police told her that he had been driving a vehicle while intoxicated and was pursued by the patrol police. According to Beselia, her son stopped during the pursuit and “lightly touched a taxi in front of him, with neither vehicle being damaged.”

As Beselia writes, law enforcement officers detained her son, and “one police officer used physical violence against him.”

“Before the propaganda media attacks me, this is the truth: last night at 00:00 I was called and told that my son Rati had been detained by the patrol police and taken away by force.

By the time I arrived at the Vakе–Saburtalo road, where the car was stopped, my son had already been taken somewhere else. As I was told, he was driving under the influence, the patrol police pursued him, he stopped, and at that moment he lightly touched the taxi car in front, with neither vehicle being damaged.

The taxi driver stated that he had no complaints and was released.

What happened next is the main issue: from 00:00 to 03:00 I was searching for my son, being told different things each time. A person who introduced himself as the police chief told me that my son was at the Digomi police department. We went to Digomi, but he was not there, as has often happened recently.

We searched and made calls, and at 03:00 he was finally brought to the Digomi department, but there was no space. They kept him waiting in the yard for one hour.

At that time, I saw Rati in a police car in handcuffs, and he told me that one police officer had used physical violence against him. I asked him to remain calm. I was unable to enter at night, and only in the morning, after many calls, were we finally allowed into the detention isolator.

This is the second main story: they brought him in with injuries to the neck area and redness on his hand. It is now 15:35, and I still do not know who detained him, I do not have the detention report, or any of the documents that must be handed to a detainee. Before bringing him into the isolator, he was verbally abused.

He has recently undergone surgery, and I warned them not to drag or manhandle him—he has already endured enough, and I do not want a repeat of the same.

For what he violated, he will be held accountable under administrative law. But will government propaganda ever ask about the responsibility of the person who used physical violence against him (the marks are visible on his neck) and who continues to violate the law?

Four lawyers are trying to identify the officer responsible and obtain the case materials to this day. I was not in a condition to write earlier due to my emotional state, but I am writing now because propaganda has begun spreading all kinds of filth.

I demand the rule of law, no matter whom it concerns. I have no fear of anything else—both the previous and the current regimes know this well,” Eka Beselia wrote.

For reference, Rati Milorava, the son of Eka Beselia, leader of the political party “For Justice,” was administratively detained by law enforcement authorities.

According to available information, Rati Milorava was intoxicated and failed to comply with a police order, which led to his detention. The incident occurred in Tbilisi, on Vazha-Pshavela Avenue.

As the Ministry of Internal Affairs told Interpressnews, Rati Milorava was detained under Article 173 of the Administrative Offenses Code, which concerns disobedience to a lawful police order.
