According to the prosecutor, real estate registered in the name of Nino Mkheidze, the wife of former Defense Minister Juansher Burchuladze, who is currently detained, has been seized in the Kingdom of Spain. This was stated by prosecutor Ana Lekiashvili after the court hearing.
As she explained, the Prosecutor’s Office applied to the Tbilisi City Court with a relevant request, after which, within the framework of legal cooperation, a Spanish court decided to impose a seizure on Nino Mkheidze’s residential property.
Lekiashvili also confirmed that, in addition to Mkheidze, the bank accounts of Burchuladze’s family members have been seized.
“In this case, all property belonging to the accused and their family members has been seized. Until now, we did not have information that the real estate registered in Spain in the name of Nino Mkheidze - Juansher Burchuladze’s wife - had been seized by the relevant Spanish court. This information was received from Spain at the beginning of this month, and today we presented it in court.
Burchuladze is accused of financial crimes, including money laundering. Relevant expert examinations have been conducted, his and his family members’ assets have been reviewed, and income and expenses have been compared. As you know, he is accused of laundering up to 7 million GEL in illegal income,” the prosecutor stated.
Asked whether the Prosecutor’s Office had requested the seizure of the assets, Lekiashvili responded affirmatively.
“Yes, we applied to the Tbilisi City Court, which issued the relevant ruling. Then, within the framework of legal cooperation, the appropriate services and the Prosecutor General’s Office addressed the Kingdom of Spain. The Spanish authorities deemed it appropriate to impose a seizure on Nino Mkheidze’s property. During the seizure, they do not have the right to dispose of the property until the investigation is completed,” the prosecutor said.
In response to a question about why the accounts of Juansher Burchuladze’s pensioner family members were seized, Lekiashvili said:
“All accounts where certain amounts of money were recorded were seized, and property was also seized. As for lifting the seizure, they may apply to the court and receive an appropriate decision. Most importantly, all of this was carried out on the basis of a court ruling.”
Meanwhile, Burchuladze’s lawyer Dimitri Khachidze told TV Pirveli that the pension accounts of Burchuladze’s mother-in-law and father-in-law had also been seized.
For reference, former Defense Minister Juansher Burchuladze has been charged under Article 194, Part 3, Subparagraph ‘g’ and Article 332, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which concern abuse of official authority and money laundering. These charges carry a sentence of 9 to 12 years of imprisonment.
In total, Burchuladze is accused of laundering 1,593,212 GEL in illegal and unjustified income. According to the prosecution, in 2023, with the assistance of his deputy, a relative, and the former head of the Procurement Department of the Ministry of Defense, Burchuladze supplied medical equipment to a military hospital for 3,940,000 GEL instead of 2,606,272 GEL, causing 1,333,728 GEL in financial damage to the ministry.
Additionally, in March 2025, Juansher Burchuladze and his wife purchased property in Spain for 544,000 euros. To conceal and disguise the origin of the funds and to give the property a lawful appearance, they allegedly concluded a fictitious sales agreement with a third party for real estate located in the settlement of Tsqneti.
As for Vladimer Gudushauri and Giorgi Khaindrava, they are accused of large-scale embezzlement, while Vasil Mkheidze is accused of assisting in embezzlement.
They have been charged under Article 182, Part 2, Subparagraphs ‘a’ and ‘d’, and Part 3, Subparagraph ‘b’ of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which provide for 7 to 11 years of imprisonment.
Vladimer Gudushauri has been released on bail.
