Prosecutor’s Office charges Giga Avaliani case defendants in five additional episodes of group violence - video evidence released

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia stated that the defendants in the criminal case of Giga Avaliani are also accused of participating in other acts of group violence. This was announced by Tbilisi Prosecutor Giorgi Mikaia at a briefing.

According to the prosecutor, this concerns five additional episodes of violence.

The Prosecutor’s Office released video footage showing the involvement of Alexander Gabashvili, Giorgi Rikadze, and Demetre Chikovani in these episodes, including footage of Alexander Gabashvili wielding various weapons.

Giorgi Rikadze participated in all five episodes.

Demetre Chikovani participated in four episodes.

Alexander Gabashvili participated in two episodes.

At the briefing, it was noted that one of the videos depicting violent acts was stored on the mobile phones of Giorgi Rikadze and Demetre Chikovani.

InterpressNews reports the Prosecutor’s Office statement in full:

“Due to high public interest, we want to inform society about new circumstances and facts revealed by the investigation in the criminal case of Giga Avaliani at this stage. Under the supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has conducted hundreds of investigative actions, questioned about 100 witnesses, and carried out various expert examinations.

As a result, it was established that in September 2025, Alexander Gabashvili learned from Nia Imnadze that she had started mathematics tutoring with Giga Avaliani, who, according to her, paid excessive attention. Alexander Gabashvili contacted his friends Giorgi Rikadze and Demetre Chikovani, explained what happened, and together they decided to attack Giga Avaliani and cause him serious bodily harm.

They identified Avaliani, examined his social media accounts to download his photos for visual recognition, determined his workplace and home addresses, studied his schedule and commuting routes, chose the location to carry out the attack, and began surveillance.

On the evening of September 29, 2025, Alexander Gabashvili, Giorgi Rikadze, and Demetre Chikovani went to Tbilisi, near the educational center in the Sea district, prepared an ambush, and set conditions to attack Avaliani and cause serious bodily harm. From around 20:00 to 22:00, they waited for Avaliani to exit the center, but due to circumstances beyond their control, they could not execute the plan that day.

On October 1, 2025, according to their plan, Alexander Gabashvili and Giorgi Rikadze carried out the attack. Around 22:20, near Building 56A, Microdistrict 3, Sea District, Tbilisi, they assaulted Giga Avaliani, causing serious bodily injuries. As a result, Avaliani died on October 24, 2025, in a medical facility.

During the ongoing investigation, other criminal acts involving these individuals were revealed: Alexander Gabashvili, Giorgi Rikadze, Demetre Chikovani, and others organized group violence to punish and intimidate people they deemed unacceptable. They systematically selected targets, communicated with them under false pretenses, lured them into meetings, and physically assaulted them.

The group also filmed these acts on mobile phones and shared them in targeted groups. Specifically, the investigation revealed:

In February 2025, Rikadze, Gabashvili, Chikovani, and others assaulted a man under 30, luring him to Microdistrict 3, Didi Digomi, and physically attacked him with multiple blows while recording the incident.

In summer 2025, Rikadze, Gabashvili, and others assaulted another selected victim in Microdistrict 3, Didi Digomi, near Building 21, again recording the act.

In February 2025, Rikadze, Chikovani, and others attacked another selected individual in a building lobby, physically assaulting and verbally abusing him, filming the incident.

In early September 2025, from 21:00 to 22:00, Chikovani and others attacked youths in a new park in Microdistrict 3, Didi Digomi, causing multiple physical injuries.

Charges: Alexander Gabashvili: Article 117(4) (intentional serious bodily harm causing death, committed collectively) and Article 225(1,2) (organizing and participating in group violence), punishable by up to 14 years imprisonment.

Giorgi Rikadze: same as Gabashvili, up to 14 years imprisonment.

Demetre Chikovani: Article 225(1,2) (group violence) and Article 18, 117(3)(l) (preparation of collective serious bodily harm), up to 9 years imprisonment, with the Avaliani case under substantive consideration in court.

All three defendants are detained pending trial at the request of the Prosecutor’s Office.

The investigation continues at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and if other individuals’ responsibility is established, whether in organizing the crime or any other criminal activity, the prosecution will take appropriate legal action. The investigation also continues to identify other participants in newly revealed criminal acts.”
