According to Givi Mikanadze, approximately GEL 20 million will be needed to support free tuition in 19 higher education institutions for the first semester of the 2026-2027 academic year

According to the Minister of Education, Science and Youth, Givi Mikanadze, approximately 20 million GEL will be required in the first semester of the 2026-2027 academic year to fund free education for students enrolled in 19 state higher education institutions.

Mikanadze made this statement during a briefing at the Government Administration.

“An unprecedented historic decision was made by the ruling team, its political council, and the Prime Minister that starting from the next academic year, all students enrolled in state higher education institutions will study free of charge. Funds related to the first semester have already been allocated within the budget. Since the first semester covers approximately October through December, this will be reflected more clearly when the 2027 state budget is presented for discussion.

Regarding the first semester, our calculations show that we are within approximately 20 million GEL, which will ensure support for free education across 19 higher education institutions,” Mikanadze stated.
