Prosecutor's Office - Charges have been filed against foreign citizens who attempted to purchase nuclear material uranium and radioactive substance cesium in Georgia for 3 million USD and planned to export them from the country

The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia has charged two individuals with attempting to illegally purchase radioactive material.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, an investigation conducted by the State Security Service revealed that two foreign citizens were attempting to purchase nuclear material uranium and radioactive material cesium for 3 million USD on the territory of Georgia. The defendants were subsequently planning to export the nuclear material and radioactive material outside Georgia. As a result of the measures taken, both defendants were arrested while attempting to illegally purchase the aforementioned material.

"The detainees were charged with attempted illegal acquisition of radioactive substances, which provides for up to 10 years of imprisonment as a form and measure of punishment.

The Prosecutor's Office will apply to the court within the time limit established by law with a request to impose detention on the defendants as a preventive measure.

The investigation is continuing at the State Security Service in order to identify all possible persons involved in the crime," reads the information.
