We are rebuilding these relations from scratch, brick by brick. Unfortunately, these relations were so destroyed under the previous administration that today we have to build everything from zero, — this was stated by the Chair of the Parliament's Committee on European Integration, Levan Makhashvili, in response to the visit of Georgia's parliamentary delegation to the United States.
According to him, in terms of building the relationship, this is a good, interesting, and timely visit, which is neither the first nor the last.
“We are essentially getting to know each other anew. Unfortunately, these relations were so destroyed under the previous administration that today we have to build everything from zero. The purpose of this visit was precisely to convey our positions to the American side, our reality, the context in which Georgia is developing — I mean the geopolitical context: why it makes the domestic or foreign policy decisions that it does.
On the other hand, we also heard the Americans' positions — not just about what plans they have regarding Georgia, but in general what plans they have for the region and how they envision the role of this region in American foreign policy. We will certainly draw the appropriate conclusions: when the delegation returns, we will summarize, review, hold consultations, and draw certain conclusions regarding subsequent steps. In terms of building this relationship, this is a good, interesting, and timely visit. It is neither the first nor the last in this direction,” — stated Makhashvili.
Speaking on the same topic, Makhashvili noted that the opposition's goal is to prevent the restoration and reboot of Georgia-U.S. relations.
“Parallel to the Georgian authorities' efforts to develop, build, and strengthen these partnerships, efforts do not cease to damage this process as much as possible and hinder it in various ways: through spreading informational lies, disinformation, and so on. [The opposition's] goal is that the restoration and reboot of these relations do not happen. That is why at first there were attacks about where you are going and who you are meeting, claiming you are meeting some Russophiles, and then — well, who will you meet with?
On one hand, we will continue to reboot these relations on the basis of fairness and mutual respect; on the other hand, we are also convinced that attempts inside Georgia and abroad will not stop to damage these relations for the simple reason — so that their narrative bubble, claiming that the country is supposedly isolated, does not collapse on their heads. However, I think this visit, already for the umpteenth time, but has given its own answer to everything,” — stated Levan Makhashvili.
