This document is nonsense - the Georgian government will decide what laws are needed within the country, - this is how the mayor of the capital, the Secretary General of the Georgian Dream, Kakha Kaladze, responds to the report of the Moscow Mechanism.
According to Kakha Kaladze, the Georgian government will act and do everything that the country needs, and not "decisions made on the instructions of someone from the outside and with a wave of the hand."
"This is complete nonsense. We all understand very well why all this started, what is behind all this. We are being asked to repeal the Law on Family Values and Protection of Minors, we are being asked to repeal the Foreign Influence Transparency Act, the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) and to act not in the interests of the country, but in accordance with their wishes. It is unthinkable, we have made a statement many times and I will repeat: the Georgian government will act and do everything that the country needs first and foremost.
The time when instructions, tasks came from outside and decisions were made by people bowing their heads is over. We will act based on the interests of the country. What laws are needed inside the country will be decided by the Georgian government, which was elected by the majority of the population, and not by decisions made on the instructions of someone from outside and with a wave of the hand.
As for interests, we see what processes are going on. In Ukraine, the court allowed same-sex marriage and we know where everything is going. External actors want countries like Georgia and Ukraine to be used to pursue their own interests. We will not allow such a decision to be made that would harm the interests of the country, the economy, and the Georgian people. The Georgian government will not do this.
A number of countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Spain, the USA, France - did not support this decision, which is welcome. This document is complete nonsense,” Kaladze noted.
According to him, their action plan is simple: decisions are made based on the interests of the country.
“You see what processes are taking place in the world, what dangers they face. Every country acts in its own interests. We will not allow some big countries, political players, to use a small country with great culture and traditions for their own interests. We have experienced firsthand how much trouble war can bring. We have not forgotten the pain and wound of 2008, we are acting only in the interests of the country,” Kaladze noted.
For information, the OSCE published a report on Georgia prepared within the framework of the Moscow Mechanism. The report discusses the events that have developed in Georgia since the spring of 2024 and provides recommendations. According to the document, the main findings are that during the mandate period, democratic backsliding was observed in Georgia. According to the report, violence against demonstrators, political opposition leaders, and journalists was combined with complete impunity for perpetrators. The government has gradually curtailed freedoms of expression and assembly by adopting new laws that target civil society, the political opposition, independent media, and the LGBT+ community. In addition, the report says that Georgia should repeal the Foreign Influence Transparency Act, the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), and the Grants Act, which regulates foreign grants. The report also provides recommendations to Georgia, OSCE participating States, and the international community.
