A representative of the United States Department of State Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, who is visiting Georgia, is meeting with opposition representatives

Peter Andreoli, a representative of the U.S. State Department, is holding the meeting at the U.S. Embassy. Attendees include Nika Gvaramia, leader of the “Coalition for Change”; Tina Bokuchava, chair of the United National Movement; Grigol Gegelia, foreign secretary of “Lelo – Strong Georgia”; and Ana Buchukuri, one of the leaders of the party “For Georgia.”

According to Grigol Gegelia, foreign secretary of “Lelo – Strong Georgia,” the meeting will focus on the release of political prisoners and the need to hold new, fair elections.

“We will have a meeting with Mr. Andreoli, who is an important representative and senior official of the U.S. State Department. He is here to assess the situation on the ground and to examine all the key political issues currently facing our democracy as challenges. Naturally, he will also look into the challenges related to the Middle Corridor. I believe the fact that Mr. Andreoli visited both the Poti port and the Anaklia area is a very positive sign of the active interest the United States has in the Middle Corridor and in Georgia’s extremely important geopolitical and geostrategic role, which the current authorities have, in our view, sacrificed to their political course, resulting in significant losses, including the Anaklia deep-sea port project.

On behalf of ‘Lelo – Strong Georgia,’ I will speak about both the Middle Corridor and all the key issues currently challenging our democracy. This includes our vision for resetting the political system, clearly stating that political prisoners must be released and new elections must be scheduled. We expect very proactive engagement from the United States in achieving these goals,” Gegelia said.

According to the U.S. Embassy, the State Department representative will also meet with government officials, private sector representatives, and members of civil society, and will visit the administrative boundary line.

In addition, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development reported that Deputy Minister Tamar Ioseliani briefed Peter Andreoli on the progress of the Anaklia deep-sea port project.
