Mark Rutte: Maintaining NATO-Georgia relations makes sense, but we must also acknowledge the recent developments - We call on Georgia to return to its pro-European and future-oriented path, which is currently causing serious concern

"Regarding NATO-Georgia relations, we believe that maintaining this relationship makes sense, but we must also acknowledge the recent developments," – stated NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte while responding to a question from "Euroskeptic" about Georgia during the presentation of the annual report.

The Alliance’s Secretary General calls on Georgia to return to its pro-European and future-oriented path, including continuing its course in terms of democracy and the rule of law, which is currently causing serious concern.

At the same time, Mark Rutte notes that dialogue with Georgia should be maintained so that there is an opportunity to discuss problems, rather than simply saying “we don’t like it and we are completely ending relations.”

"Regarding Georgia, we are in close coordination with the European Union. As for NATO-Georgia relations, we believe that maintaining this relationship makes sense, but we must also acknowledge the recent developments. That is why we call on Georgia to return to its pro-European and future-oriented path, including continuing its course in terms of democracy and the rule of law, which is currently causing serious concern. Therefore, we must maintain dialogue and discussion and take the position that it is better to continue relations so that we have the opportunity to discuss these problems, rather than saying that we don’t like this and completely ending the relations," – stated Mark Rutte.

For information: Today, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte presented the Alliance’s annual report, which also includes a section on Georgia.

The report notes that “against the background of the 2024 parliamentary elections and subsequent events, the Allies reviewed NATO’s engagement with Georgia.”

“As a result, a redefinition of the priorities of certain elements of NATO-Georgia cooperation, including some aspects of the NATO-Georgia Substantial Package, has taken place,” – according to Mark Rutte’s 2025 report.
