Nino Guleishvili: Without this, consumers could not have received uninterrupted electricity - Tariff increase should ensure stable supply, fewer failures, and network improvements

“The year 2025 showed us that during periods of peak electricity consumption, when there were extreme temperatures, the network was overloaded and the number of failures increased significantly. In addition, the number of consumers grows every year - in this situation, consumers would not have been able to receive uninterrupted supply in the future,” said Nino Guleishvili, Acting Energy Ombudsman, speaking to journalists.

She explained that improving this situation should be achieved through the electricity tariff increase decided by GNERC.

“For each of us, of course, the consumer is important and a priority. Consumers must receive stable service in terms of electricity supply. Recently, this has been a major challenge for our office, because a very large number of consumer complaints - about 80% - were directly related to disconnections and other problems with electricity supply. There were frequent outages, failures, and during peak hours, the network could not handle the load.

The year 2025 showed that during peak consumption periods, when there was extreme heat, the network was overloaded and failures increased significantly. On top of that, the number of consumers grows year by year. Beyond the important rehabilitation work needed to generally improve and develop the network, new consumers require that the network be redesigned and strengthened from start to finish.

All of this means that, under the current situation, consumers would not have been able to receive uninterrupted supply in the future. Accordingly, the commission’s decision should ensure stable electricity supply for consumers in the upcoming period, gradually reduce failures, improve the network, and provide high-quality supply,” said Guleishvili.

It is noted that at today’s GNERC session, it was decided that electricity tariffs for consumers in both Tbilisi and the regions will increase by 5 tetri. From April 1, tariffs for the commercial sector will also rise.
