Levan Makhashvili: Radicals have formed a “rainbow opposition”

Radicals have formed a so-called “rainbow opposition” – every day, every moment, depending on which way the wind blows or where the rain falls, they feel the need to present themselves under a new name and color. This was stated by Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliament’s Committee on European Integration, while speaking to journalists about the rally announced by the “Opposition Alliance” for May 26.

According to Makhashvili, the country is not interested in these new, attractive names or rainbow colors. What people need is concrete solutions to concrete problems. Instead, the opposition is trying to confuse the public with new names.

Regarding the planning of the May 26 rally, Makhashvili said it is not surprising that the organizers are the same people behind the May 26, 2011 events.

“It is very interesting how these events coincide again, their so-called ‘final acts,’ which are predictable and involve issues of public confrontation. I am not surprised that the authors of May 26, 2011, are again focusing on May 26. Once again, they are trying to divide society and stir conflict. And when we talk about depolarization, here we see clearly who the main actors of polarization are.

As for this alliance, a few weeks ago they announced, ‘Let’s stand up, we are together,’ and then they returned with new names, new colors, dividing people under different banners. These radicals have formed a rainbow opposition – every day, every moment, wherever the wind blows or the rain falls, they feel the need to present themselves under a new name and color to the public.

The country is not interested in these new, pretty names, creative themes, or rainbow colors. What the population cares about is having concrete solutions to concrete problems. Instead, they try to confuse the public with new names,” Makhashvili said.

Speaking further on the topic, Makhashvili emphasized that society is not interested in names, surnames, or colors; it is interested in concrete solutions to specific problems.

“Diversity itself is not the problem. The problem is that they keep spinning around the same circle, the same issues. Society is not interested in names, surnames, or colors; society wants solutions to concrete problems.

Instead of providing solutions, they are piling problems on society from above. That is the problem. Let them call themselves whatever they want – they can spin around the same circle all they want. For us, as the political authorities, this is acceptable, even good, because society sees what an unserious force we are talking about,” Makhashvili stated.

For context, the “Opposition Alliance” is launching a national mobilization campaign that will last for two months. According to them, the symbolic culmination of the campaign will be May 26, when a large public rally will take place in Tbilisi to mark Georgia’s Independence Day.
