Grigol Gegelia - We still believe that the implementation of the Moscow Mechanism report - the release of political prisoners, the cessation of political persecution, and dialogue on new parliamentary elections - is the right framework

We believe that the implementation of the Moscow Mechanism report - the release of political prisoners, the cessation of political persecution and dialogue regarding new parliamentary elections is the right framework and action plan - our partners say exactly the same - this is how the Foreign Secretary of Lelo - Strong Georgia, Grigol Gegelia, responded to the recommendations adopted by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe on Georgia.

According to him, Lelo made exactly this type of statement a few weeks ago.

“The spirit of dialogue that Lelo - Strong Georgia was talking about when it said that we consider it right to take into account the recommendations of the Moscow Mechanism and that in the wake of this process, the right type of political dialogue should take place for the de-escalation of the situation, the release of political prisoners and the scheduling of new parliamentary elections - this is exactly the spirit that we are now seeing in the new report of the Council of Europe. We heard the same thing from Washington, when the Helsinki Commission clearly called on the US administration to either conduct a specific political process around the implementation of the Moscow Mechanism or to sanction the regime. Accordingly, we see that the framework and the call are correct. A few weeks ago, Lelo made exactly this type of doctrinal statement.

We still believe that the implementation of the Moscow Mechanism report - the release of political prisoners, the cessation of political persecution, and a dialogue regarding new parliamentary elections - is the correct framework and action plan. As we see, our partners are saying exactly the same thing,” said Grigol Gegelia.

For information, the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe adopted recommendations on Georgia.

According to the report, the Congress of the Council of Europe calls on the Georgian authorities “to urgently resume political dialogue at all levels of government, through an inclusive political process involving all stakeholders, in order to reduce polarization and restore the checks and balances necessary for a pluralistic democracy; to implement the recommendations of the Congress and the opinions of the Venice Commission in order to restore genuine local democracy in accordance with the Charter.”
