\The Orthodox Church celebrates the Entry of the Savior into Jerusalem in glory, known as the feast of Palm Sunday (Bzoba). On this occasion, festive liturgies will be held in churches.
At 10:00, the Patriarchal Locum Tenens, Metropolitan Shio (Mujiri) of Senaki and Chkhorotsku, will lead the liturgy at the Sioni Patriarchal Cathedral.
Following the service, a memorial prayer (panikhida) will be held for the soul of His Holiness and Beatitude, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II.
Palm Sunday is the first of the twelve major movable feasts and is always celebrated on the Sunday preceding Easter.
According to the Gospel, the Savior’s entry into Jerusalem resembled the triumphant arrival of a king into his capital. Ordinary people welcomed Him ceremonially — some laid their garments on the road, while others held palm (boxwood) branches as they greeted Him. From all sides, voices cried out: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
On this day, believers go to churches carrying boxwood branches and candles. In churches, the branches are blessed as a symbol of welcoming the Lord.
