Citizens and activists gathered near the legislative building stayed overnight at the April 9 memorial.
From the morning, people have been going to the memorial to pay tribute to the fallen heroes. Among those present was the Acting U.S. Ambassador, Alan Purcell.
Citizens are planning various civic marches from different locations throughout the day. At 20:00, they will gather again at the April 9 memorial.
For reference, 37 years have passed since the tragedy of April 9 tragedy. In the early hours of April 9, 1989, units of the Soviet armed forces dispersed a peaceful protest in central Tbilisi near the parliament building, resulting in casualties.
As a result of the crackdown, 21 people were killed. Thousands of demonstrators gathered in front of parliament were poisoned by an unidentified gas.
On April 9, 1991, the then Supreme Council declared the date as the Day of the Restoration of Georgia’s State Independence.
