Nordic and Baltic ambassadors paid tribute to those killed on April 9

Ambassadors of the Nordic and Baltic countries honored the memory of those who died on April 9.

According to Anne Toft Sørensen, the embassies marked the occasion by laying flowers at the memorial of the victims of the tragic events of April 9, 1989, when peaceful demonstrators fighting for freedom and independence in Tbilisi were violently dispersed.

“Today the Nordic-Baltic embassies laid flowers to honor the victims of the tragic events of April 9, 1989, when peaceful demonstrators in Tbilisi were violently dispersed while standing for freedom and independence. Denmark firmly supports Georgia’s sovereignty and independence,” Sørensen wrote on X.

For reference, 37 years have passed since the April 9 tragedy. In the early hours of April 9, 1989, Soviet military units dispersed a peaceful protest in central Tbilisi near the parliament building, resulting in casualties.

As a result of the crackdown, 21 people were killed, and thousands gathered in front of parliament were poisoned by an unidentified gas.

On April 9, 1991, the then Supreme Council declared the date as the Day of the Restoration of Georgia’s State Independence.
