American senators introduced the resolution in connection with World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2026.

The resolution “recognizes the growing threats facing the free press worldwide, including increasing dangers against journalists working in conflict zones and under repressive regimes.”

The resolution states that, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, more than 300 journalists were detained worldwide in 2025, including Mzia Amaghlobeli, founder of the publications “Batumelebi” and “Netgazeti.”

The author of the resolution is Democratic Senator Brian Schatz.
