We have some issues with Georgia, given that the government is not actually taking real steps when they say they want to join the European Union, Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, told reporters in Yerevan ahead of the European Political Community Summit.
As for the summit itself, she said, “the Yerevan summit shows how important the Caucasus is.”
“Especially now, when there is a war in Iran. We are talking about unity, but also about resilience to the threats we face,” Kaja Kallas said.
When asked how important the Middle Corridor is in this geopolitical situation, she replied:
“The Middle Corridor is very important. I mean what we see in the Middle East. Also, everyone is discussing how to diversify trade routes, reduce the risks of closing one trade route. That is why connectivity and these routes are extremely important. Of course, we need to see what we can do in this regard and who our partners are,” she noted.
Kallas also spoke about relations between Georgia and the European Union, stating that the Georgian government is taking steps in the wrong direction.
“Of course, we have certain issues with Georgia, given that the government is not actually taking steps when they say they want to join the European Union. We see that they are taking steps in the wrong direction. This also gives us limitations, for example, in terms of allocating funding,” Kaja Kallas noted.
