First of all, this is an attack on freedom of speech and nothing else, - this is how Justice Minister Paata Salia assessed the report on Georgia adopted by the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs.
According to him, none of the facts covered by the television stations named in the report are incorrect, false or presented in a propagandistic manner.
"When it comes to propaganda television, please name specific facts. The decision of the UK has been appealed and of course, this has its own legal process. Unfortunately, it is a very protracted process because the three instances are actually part of the BBC and will then be transferred to the regulatory body. We very much hope that in the end it will turn out that this decision on their part was unfounded. Anyone can have an opinion. Suppressing this opinion is precisely the suppression of freedom of speech. In this case, the decision was made on the basis of opinions, we will definitely voice this during the legal procedures. It is even written in the complaint we submitted that there is no specific fact that can be qualified as the basis for propaganda. None of the facts covered by these television stations are incorrect, false, irrelevant or presented in a propagandistic manner. As for the opinions of the guests, any television station can voice such a different opinion that the editorial board of the television station itself may also contradict, but we do not throw people out of studios because of this. Accordingly, talking about the existence of propaganda without a specific factual basis is unfounded, which is why we have appealed. We should not provide the facts, the facts should be provided by those who make the decision," said Paata Salia.
The European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs adopted a report on Georgia. 53 MEPs supported the annual report on Georgia, while 14 voted against it.
According to the draft amendments to the report, the European Parliament condemns the role of media outlets affiliated with the Georgian Dream in spreading systematic disinformation and hostile propaganda against the European Union, its institutions and representatives.
