EU External Action Service sends letter to Opposition Alliance

Georgia remains high on our agenda, reads a letter sent by the EU External Action Service to the Opposition Alliance.

"Thank you for your letter of 17 April 2026 concerning the worsening situation in Georgia. We appreciate your concerns and acknowledge the challenges Georgia is facing.

Georgia remains high on our agenda. The Foreign Affairs Council of 21 April reviewed the continuously deteriorating situation in Georgia and discussed EU pressure in response to the ongoing democratic backsliding. The High Representative stressed that there were no signs of improvement, and that ministers had an explicit message that the Georgian government needs to change the course of action. The European Union remains committed to its relationship with Georgia and is actively engaged in supporting the country's democratic development and respect for fundamental rights. The EU's stance on these issues is well-established, and we continue to encourage all parties to work towards a stable and prosperous future for Georgia.

The EU has been closely following developments in the country and has discussed them on several occasions. The EU's policies and actions are guided by its founding values and principles, which include respect for the rule of law, democratic mechanisms, and human rights. In its interactions with Georgia, the EU has consistently emphasized the importance of these principles. The EU's cooperation with Georgia is subject to regular review and assessment, and decisions are made based on a thorough evaluation of the situation. The EU's goal is to support the well-being and prosperity of the Georgian people, and it will continue to engage with the country in a manner that is consistent with its values and principles.

The EU's doors remain open to Georgia, and the EU remains committed to supporting people-to- people contacts, including through assistance to media, civil society representatives, and young people. At the same time, the EU actively counters disinformation narratives propagated by representatives of Georgian Dream and senior officials, while reaffirming its steadfast support for the Georgian people.

The EU stands ready to support the Georgian people's European aspirations and the country's path towards accession, should the Georgian authorities decide to reverse their present course of action", reads the letter.
