Minister of Health Mikheil Sarjveladze visited the Referral Center for Children's Neuromuscular Diseases at the Geneva University Hospital. According to the Ministry of Health, the Minister met with the head of the center, internationally qualified neuropediatrician Dr. Joel Fluss.

According to the information released by the Ministry of Health, the main topic of the meeting was the management of rare neuromuscular diseases. Among other things, the conversation touched on Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

“The focus was on rehabilitation and side effect management. It was emphasized that a large part of innovative therapies have not yet been approved worldwide or in Europe.

The head of the Referral Center for Children's Neuromuscular Diseases at the University Hospital of Geneva stated that the management protocol for patients diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in Switzerland provides for treatment with the same medications that are currently being implemented in Georgia.

According to Mikheil Sarjveladze, the Ministry is actively and in detail studying world practice, approaches of regulatory bodies and conclusions of international experts in order to assess the real medical picture in this direction, safety risks and long-term results.

The meeting was attended by: Zaza Lominadze, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Health and Social Affairs, Revaz Lominadze, Permanent Representative of Georgia to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva, and Tornike Sologhashvili, Medical Director of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the University Hospital of Geneva.

Mikheil Sarjveladze was on a working visit to Geneva within the framework of the 79th session of the World Health Assembly. In parallel with his participation in the work of the Assembly, he held bilateral meetings with the heads of healthcare agencies of various European countries, where one of the main topics of discussion was precisely the above-mentioned issues,” reads the information.
