In my opinion, restoring a strategic partnership with America under the Georgian Dream is unrealistic. The only thing that can happen is to shake hands and take a photo/video, otherwise, America will not be allowed into this country, - Zurab Japaridze, one of the leaders of the Coalition for Change, told journalists after a meeting with a delegation from the US Department of State.
According to him, "the ruling team has spent years isolating this country and it is not in their interest to bring America and Georgia closer together."
"There was no talk at all about formalizing anything between the Georgian Dream and Washington. The discussion was about what Georgia's interests are, what America's interests are in this region and this country. The discussion was about how these interests can coincide and be pursued. The precondition for that is that there must be democracy, an independent judiciary, and the rule of law in this country. When we talk about American interests, especially under this administration, we are mostly talking about America's economic interests, which require an independent judiciary and the rule of law, which are the foundations of liberal democracy, which we do not have. I would only be happy if there were more American interests in this country. Georgia no longer has a strategic partnership with the United States. The only thing that the Georgian Dream is interested in is that they somehow post a photo/video of Kobakhidze or someone shaking hands with Rubio. Beyond that, there are no economic interests, no rapprochement with America, no American entry into the country...
In my opinion, restoring a strategic partnership with America under the Georgian Dream is unrealistic. The only thing that can happen is that they shake hands and take photos/videos, but they will not let America into this country. They have spent years isolating this country, and it is not in their interest to bring America and Georgia closer together. American companies will not enter this country either, because there is no independent court in this country,” Japaridze said.
For information, the leaders of the Coalition for Change met with a delegation from the US State Department. The US State Department delegation arrived in Georgia on May 24. The delegation includes Charles Yockey, Special Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of State, and Peter Andreoli, a representative of the U.S. State Department's Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs. The US State Department delegation has already met with some of the opposition and government representatives. They also held a meeting at the Patriarchate.
