The Ministry condemns any kind of violence and declares its full readiness to cooperate with the investigative agency in order to fully and objectively establish the circumstances of the case and bring the perpetrators to justice, - Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Aleksandre Darakhvelidze stated regarding the violence against a citizen by police officers in Gori.
According to Darakhvelidze, the incident was preceded by a police preventive measure, during which a citizen was stopped who did not obey the police request and “damaged the health of a ministry employee with a stone”.
“The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia echoes the unfortunate incident that occurred in the city of Gori, during which, within the framework of a police preventive measure, the police exceeded their authority by using violence, resulting in the injury of a citizen.
The Ministry condemns any kind of violence and declares its full readiness to cooperate with the investigative agency in order to fully and objectively establish the circumstances of the case and to hold the perpetrators accountable before the law. Within the framework of the aforementioned cooperation, as a result of intensive investigative and procedural measures, 6 employees of the Ministry have already been detained. It should be noted that this specific incident was preceded by a police preventive measure, within the framework of which a citizen was detained. He did not comply with the police request to verify his data, during which he became aggressive and physically attacked one of the employees of the Ministry. In particular, he injured his health with a blunt object - a stone. The police officer in question is undergoing intensive treatment in one of the medical institutions. An investigation has been launched into the incident under Article 353 of the Criminal Code, which refers to assault on a police officer. The case was also transferred to the Prosecutor General's Office of Georgia for investigation, and intensive investigative actions are being conducted in both cases in order to establish each factual circumstance in a specific criminal case. The Ministry once again declares its full readiness to cooperate intensively with the investigative agency. In the event of any kind of violence, wherever unlawful actions are detected, both by employees and by other persons, the Ministry will take all necessary measures to ensure that the perpetrators of the crime are held accountable before the law,” said Aleksandre Darakhvelidze.
