The US State Department’s statement confirms that the United States does not abandon its long-term strategic partnership with Georgia and that our country remains an important area of US interest, Grigol Gegelia, one of the leaders of Lelo-Strong Georgia, stated.
Gegelia drew attention to the role of the opposition in the US Embassy’s statement and noted that the document emphasizes the importance of the opposition’s participation and representation in political processes.
“It is important that Washington expresses its readiness for a new stage of relations with Georgia, but at the same time clearly indicates that the full restoration of relations requires specific steps. This once again shows that despite the damage to relations with Western partners by the Georgian Dream, the window of opportunity is still open for Georgia.
It is also important that the US pays special attention to the participation and representation of the opposition. The message is clear - a functional democracy requires a strong opposition and its participation in political institutions.
Strong Georgia-Lelo has defended this position from the very beginning: Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic future requires a struggle on all democratic fronts, including, first of all, through elections,” Gegelia states.
